A World of Technology at School
Patricia Hawke
In a world of technology our school classrooms need to keep up. As much as technology is used on an everyday basis with students outside of school, its very important to keep the kids attention by implementing a lot of technology into the classrooms. As much as classroom technology has been improving over the years, it is not improving fast enough. Schools need to focus on presenting lesson plans, labs and class work with as much updated technology as possible to keep the kids challenged. Ninety-six percent of students say they use technology at home so during class lectures they tend to zone out until they are home to utilize the Internet and computers to type assignments and research projects.
With so many students having access to technology at home, schools really should incorporate more technology into their classrooms. They need to keep up with the demands of the technologically inclined students and help to teach the four percent of students who do not have access to computers or technology at home. Since the majority of students use technology so often the schools need to use technology often during class as well to keep the students minds from wandering. Schools are starting to implement more and more technology into the schools and by doing this, the students are showing much more interest in participating in class.
Schools are starting to make changes by having their IT professionals hook up their schools with WIFI connections so students are able to have access to the internet on their WIFI ready devices. This helps students to be able to research project material, email fellow classmates and teachers and utilize the Internet to help them with homework. With virtual learning on a rise, it’s important for schools to equip their campuses with WIFI. There are so many benefits to incorporating technology into the classrooms, not only does it challenge the students in a greater way, it also prepares them for college, since with college they utilize the internet constantly and there are many online classes that they offer.
Many educational devices that utilize technology are coming out; eReaders are starting to offer virtual textbooks, iPads, smartphones and mp3 players are offering educational applications that help the students on a daily basis during school. Educational applications can be used by teachers to create hands on technology earning with some devices that the students already own. Word Lens, is an app that can be used by foreign language teachers to create fun and exciting scavenger hunts through their phones, iPods or iPads. Molecules, is an application utilized by science teachers to show 3-D models of different molecules. Blackboard mobile learn is an application that teachers can update assignments on and show upcoming tests and quizzes so students can manage it all from their application and have their school dues dates organized.
The schools are starting to incorporate technology but it is not coming at a fast enough pace. Its important for the schools to keep up with the 21
st century technology and challenge the students with new technology so they can teach students in a way that will keep their attention and give them the absolute best head start on life in a technological world!
